Luka Ghiotto, Hitech GP, started from reverse grid pole this morning but the lead was only brief when the lights went out as the Italian had a slow start. This left the driver vulnerable to Felipe Drugovich, MP Motorsport, who started in second as he took the lead of the race at turn one.
However, it wasn’t a great start for Giuliano Alesi, BWT HWA as he stalled on the formation lap which resulted in a pit lane start for the French driver.
After Louis Deletraz, Charouz, lost ninth place to Nikita Mazepin, Hitech, at turn one on lap nine, he clung onto 10th as if his life depended on it. Forced to defend from Christian Lundgaard, ART, who was hot on the heels of the Swiss driver lap after lap.
There was an unfortunate puncture for Guanyu Zhou, Uni-Virtiousi, on lap 21, which forced the driver into the pit lane to swap his ruined hard compound tyres for used soft tyres.
With only three laps to go, only five drivers had pitted for fresher tyres.
It was the winning move at the start of the race as Drugovich took the chequered flag with a significant 9.5 second gap over Ghiotto, after he secured the lead on the first corner.
